We have far too many tags, partly because we're not synonymizing them - the first step in the mods merging them. I think we need to start working on this problem.

I've been having trouble creating synonyms forever. Just figured out why.

I kept getting that annoying message, "You don't have enough score". For example, I went to the tag problem-set-1 and try to make it a synonym for pset-1 and fail. Turns out, I needed to do it the other way - go to the master tag, pset-1 and suggest problem-set-1 as the synonym and it works. You need to start at the tag that you have the score with to suggest a synonym that you may not have any score on.

It's all counter-intuitive to me, but that's how it works.

Anyways, I suggested a change on SEmeta. Perhaps everyone could go over and offer your opinions?

Make tag synonym process bi-directional

BTW, can we start working on synonymizing or eliminating tags?

Did you know that as of this writing, we have 900 different tags!?!?!?!

@NattyNat77 Not even moderators can delete tags. The only possible actions are: merging two tags (done from moderators), or removing the tag from the questions that use it (plus, adding a better tag). The latter is only done when the questions using it are few (and not hundreds).

Also, keep in mind that making a tag synonym of another one doesn't make it disappear. It cannot be added to new tags. It still required to merge the tags, if you think they both have the same meaning.
